The Game's Dodge Roll Deserves Praise

Having spent time with Elden Ring, or just about any action-adventure title, you're probably acquainted with the wonderful mechanic known as the “evasion roll.” This evasion technique allows your character to perform a front, lateral, or rearward tumble to evade all incoming damage and gain space from foes. Seems useful, right?

This rolling move, nevertheless, has received plenty of criticism, and not only due to the tumbling; it's been labeled foolish, a cheap tactic, and an unrealistic move — and in some cases, I agree. You should see me somersaulting past local Doppler gangs in a well-known fantasy game — untouchable! But the title's rolling dodge is the dodge roll to top all dodge rolls dodge rolls, and let me explain.

For this particular game, the creators discovered a great way to address all opinions claiming the maneuver is too easy: just grant every enemy overwhelming force, increase it further, and all heroes who dares come near them will be eternally grateful for their dodge-roll ability, me included. Given the intense difficulty, successfully rolling to victory comes across as a triumph, instead of an unfair advantage.

No different defensive move in Elden Ring approaches this sense of satisfaction and dependability, since rapid sprints don't cover much ground and guard stances get quickly shattered by strong enemies. A person once suggested jumping as a go-to game avoidance strategy, but aside from not providing ideal movement, It wasn't clear to me getting my skull smashed in could enhance my odds of overcoming challenges (lack of skill, maybe).

Perfecting the Skill

While this evasion move grants reprieve in an otherwise brutal game, it isn't without skill. To begin with, Elden Ring's evasion move just activates a period of immunity after you stop pressing the roll control, which stops a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dangerous scenarios. Additionally, even though it can move you aside from enemies, it's far more effective to use it as an opportunity to advance, preferably behind the opponent, and land some hits. And, finally, you must still grasp and foresee enemy attacks, because rolling prematurely of an extended wind-up could conclude your immunity prior to the hit connecting… causing significant harm.

A Balanced Mechanic

Although evasion-rolling in fast repetition may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't truly feasible in this title. Of course, that fails to transform it into a believable fighting maneuver — which is precisely why it would be dreadful to witness it in a title like Kingdom Come: Deliverance — yet we're discussing a flashy fantasy title being considered, therefore, it doesn't matter?

Comparable to any well-executed evasion move, the game's rolling animation is improved by a brief tumbling leap at the beginning, giving it an energetic feel instead of dropping the character on the floor. According to your loadout, the technique may seem super agile or moderately cumbersome, however, it's consistently swifter and more seamless than the evasion moves used in Dark Souls. True, you will stick your big blade in the dirt when wielding such equipment, but that's your responsibility for avoiding alternative arms (In jest — steer clear of the game with a crossbow).

Optimal Harmony

Elden Ring's evasion system establishes an ideal equilibrium between challenge and opportunity, offering hope of victory while endangering that very prospect at the tiniest misstep. Learn this skill, and you'll obtain not only success, but satisfaction.
